It is always a good idea to have open lines of communication with your landlord. They are human too and you might find that being open and honest with them might open up mountains of compassion and understanding for you as the renter…they know you are human too and circumstances beyond your control happen. Of course, you don’t want to take advantage of kindness and likewise you would want to show them stability within your payment during normal circumstances.
Deferment During Corona-virus
Some circumstances are out of our control, take the Coronavirus pandemic. We as American’s have been very lucky with the amount of consideration, we are receiving to cover our essential cost while most of our jobs have vaporized into thin air. In an interview with The Washington Post, FHFA’s Director Mark Calabria stated, “This is a situation where we’ve told the landlords, if you give people a break, we’ll give you a break.” The Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) announced, “that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which the agency regulates, will offer multifamily property owners loan deferrals if they promise not to evict tenants.”
Evictions Halted
In an attempt to keep everyone in their home or apartment, most jurisdictions have postponed evictions. The current circumstances we find ourselves in is to no fault of our own, hence the accommodations. Mortgage forbearance is being offered to landlords which will make it easier on them during this time when renters can pay their rent. In this time of crisis, we are lucky to have all of these safeguards moved into action.
In conclusion just remember landlords are people too and you’ll probably be surprised at how willing they are to work with you. They have to understand the circumstances that everyone in the world is in at the moment. It is highly unlikely that someone is beating down their door for your apartment, moving right now might even become illegal when lockdowns hit your town. The landlord is being offered help with the mortgage furloughs, they should in good faith be helpful to their tenants. We are all in this together.
